I have recently been engaged in an online course called <a href="http://www.creativebadasschallenge.com/">Creative Badass Challenge</a>, and today's challenge is to share something personal in a blog post or social media platform. It should be authentic, revealing your soft underbelly, suggests the course's author, Dave Conrey. Vulnerability. Problems, maybe. Discomfort. Well, I've got plenty of all those things, but the thing I'm choosing to write about is that around here where I live, NOBODY WEARS WHAT I'M MAKING. And I feel weird about it. And that's all. Let me explain.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8XBRnLFmlZBOBk6jHf-mOPQ5tT965w_DrhfJ0jeEzsfKLoHWA5ji79-UV9IXNAv2nGvGsdhq3IeEoIExpvcQ-eWFfsJlGNFNM55I6w4G7YtONP9OBGK5iZvym5j9yliXEHKf278KG4xLU/s1600/IMG_2735.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8XBRnLFmlZBOBk6jHf-mOPQ5tT965w_DrhfJ0jeEzsfKLoHWA5ji79-UV9IXNAv2nGvGsdhq3IeEoIExpvcQ-eWFfsJlGNFNM55I6w4G7YtONP9OBGK5iZvym5j9yliXEHKf278KG4xLU/s320/IMG_2735.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
In February of 2014, a guy in New York asked me to make him some kanzashi lapel flowers for men. I had previously been making only women's hair accessories, brooches, necklaces and bracelets. I had never before seen the application that this guy was talking about (BTW, what became of you, Don, and what have you done with my flowers?). I still haven't seen one on an actual human being, except for a few guys around here who wear mine, intending to sell some of them. Fast forward to now, June of 2015, I have seen lapel flowers only in fashion photographs, and in some guys' personal photos on Instagram. Every once in a while, a friend tells me of a sighting of such a thing on TV. I can only conclude that what I'm making is a nascent fashion trend that has not yet established itself in the Midwest. I do sell these things, and I sometimes mail orders to Midwest addresses, but they are an uncommon observance in my life.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTkKkuQIZNvNtbl9vRGvDxsDZsQJnxkqZWMQ8gspPqG0uC4-4qD4J4YfvZMv2un8cP2rOuMFV5yDX5sNNjCDvUElogt4pQhomnLB6LF9Qs8jzLG0urkjID-GBOg7AcaedsTBLLSB2dxsZA/s1600/newnecklaces+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTkKkuQIZNvNtbl9vRGvDxsDZsQJnxkqZWMQ8gspPqG0uC4-4qD4J4YfvZMv2un8cP2rOuMFV5yDX5sNNjCDvUElogt4pQhomnLB6LF9Qs8jzLG0urkjID-GBOg7AcaedsTBLLSB2dxsZA/s320/newnecklaces+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So, why am I making them? More importantly, why am I changing the focus of my entire Etsy shop and Instagram feed to men's accessories? Four really good reasons!<br />
<br />
1. I can use any colors I want. I don't have to worry if the colors or fabric I choose are going to go with some gal's dress. This is liberating! The flower can blend with a jacket or contrast with it; I feel like I have so much freedom.<br />
2. They sell way faster than women's stuff. I got proof. When I look at the numbers, I have sold about twice as much stuff since I sold my first lapel flower, as in the previous year, and that's just counting the men's accessories (including lapel buttons, lapel bow tie pins and button cuff links).<br />
3. I can charge twice as much. For example, a pair of kanzashi flower hair clips goes for $25; take one of the flowers, put it on a tie tack, and that alone sells for $25. What can be bad, as my mother used to say?<br />
4. I get at least three times the attention on Instagram for the men's items, as for the women's things. Who wouldn't be drawn towards making more men's accessories?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6h48uyKA286nMQgysDkXWkkgBS7rprPWYtSkABtY6dRtcWpru0QQW4c-NQMJH1BzJU7JJLu2avm3lqwDnVzjrw09emMtjq2wi6TjzR3UAs8QkV1Bb6e-Blg_uX3seqsZbBLpKQuJABuso/s1600/IMG_2394.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6h48uyKA286nMQgysDkXWkkgBS7rprPWYtSkABtY6dRtcWpru0QQW4c-NQMJH1BzJU7JJLu2avm3lqwDnVzjrw09emMtjq2wi6TjzR3UAs8QkV1Bb6e-Blg_uX3seqsZbBLpKQuJABuso/s320/IMG_2394.JPG" width="278" /></a></div>
<br />
Clearly, I'm going to have to be patient. I hope to see more of what I make become more commonplace, even around here, in the next few years, so that people understand what the hell I'm doing. I'm using a lot of energy, here! And I'm soon going to change the name of my Etsy shop, as well as other things. <br />
<br />
A while ago, a guy contacted Helen about kanzashi boutonnieres that he wanted for his wedding in September. Helen and Alvin emailed each other quite a bit, discussing the merits of various fabrics, shapes, colors, etc. Alvin eventually settled on a particular design, and Helen made 8 lapel flowers for him. Here are some of the photos she took of her process.<br />
<br />
First, cutting fabrics with a rotary cutter and a cutting board. We used a lavender kimono silk that came from Helen's Kanzashi Fairy Godmother in Japan (it was in the box I'm sitting on, in the above photo!) and a silver grey dupioni silk that Helen got from <a href="http://www.patriceprocopio.com/">Patrice</a> . Helen used 2.25 inch squares for the lavender, and 1.5 inch squares for the grey.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiryQWrm1XmRfGBwG4WJU0czs8SyDND9jMKfHwKa41AJ8JSr_TCNddk2JJIFe5nBxT-E85Uv4xqNFHSxsdDdnmUL60vvmwpdq1leEe7CT7nvOpRBQ2qxTYdujvnMCiY91X2jSVhf2mZ82t/s1600/IMG_2823.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiryQWrm1XmRfGBwG4WJU0czs8SyDND9jMKfHwKa41AJ8JSr_TCNddk2JJIFe5nBxT-E85Uv4xqNFHSxsdDdnmUL60vvmwpdq1leEe7CT7nvOpRBQ2qxTYdujvnMCiY91X2jSVhf2mZ82t/s320/IMG_2823.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM-OPyfbTAnnKkagJa19n9lmAEiIF78aDPTCLfjsETdHmeX4_fa0hirOHslCP1wFIxz-civW5AGWWy4lcukGIjXJ1v_VfSh6UbbMxcUaZj0itIo7OIKI85_aAt8DyneJAmZFgJAod79Rfl/s1600/IMG_2779.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM-OPyfbTAnnKkagJa19n9lmAEiIF78aDPTCLfjsETdHmeX4_fa0hirOHslCP1wFIxz-civW5AGWWy4lcukGIjXJ1v_VfSh6UbbMxcUaZj0itIo7OIKI85_aAt8DyneJAmZFgJAod79Rfl/s320/IMG_2779.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
Helen decided to sew these petals, because she would be adding pearl beads later, and it's way easier to sew beads into the center of a flower that <i>doesn't </i>have rice glue on the petal edges. Here are all the petals ready to go.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXRnZ6w-AhTHVgkPKVoF3N8GE0sOCI5LosuyNTJ1c5Pijclp4tOSlq3CDsNq4gBxQ3TfgHPXAyOogCEWyJRkc3ZhM3CaqkHgtBqV0gBVG9jpWkwvp0WtIjscxESRoNYL3ZwioRuWtuwMxo/s1600/IMG_2793.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXRnZ6w-AhTHVgkPKVoF3N8GE0sOCI5LosuyNTJ1c5Pijclp4tOSlq3CDsNq4gBxQ3TfgHPXAyOogCEWyJRkc3ZhM3CaqkHgtBqV0gBVG9jpWkwvp0WtIjscxESRoNYL3ZwioRuWtuwMxo/s320/IMG_2793.JPG" width="276" /></a></div>

Next, petals glued into 4-petal flowers....<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, that was fun, and Helen is hoping to find more grooms and groomsmen! Meanwhile, Helen started participating in a thing called the <a href="http://www.creativebadasschallenge.com/">Creative Badass Challenge</a> . It is one month full of difficult things to do and think about, aimed at helping creative business owners to work better. One of the challenges was fun.....it was about getting messy, throwing caution to the winds, making something that we are not intending to sell. Helen decided to try making a flower that has a different fabric for every petal. She was worried that the different textures would be a problem, but a chrysanthemum-shaped flower seems to be able to handle that OK. Here's what she came up with....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAFNsQi9BJX7rxEdY-avhhR_nWwfMrfrBn1eS-kLQsILz2L8LdlGpoXxeJPNWY-qebAf3QijQcRKuI0im47O7uSuy4Tnjdtb9VKvO5KB8cmzDkXLCL8BOF9GadY05IGqgVrJ5eNA0fOtvH/s1600/IMG_2843.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAFNsQi9BJX7rxEdY-avhhR_nWwfMrfrBn1eS-kLQsILz2L8LdlGpoXxeJPNWY-qebAf3QijQcRKuI0im47O7uSuy4Tnjdtb9VKvO5KB8cmzDkXLCL8BOF9GadY05IGqgVrJ5eNA0fOtvH/s320/IMG_2843.JPG" width="289" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This flower is all silk....chirimen, charmeuse, habutai, different vintage kimono silks, and a couple things we don't know what to call. A chartreuse jade bead is in the center, and the flower is mounted on a tie tack finding. <br />
So, it's been around 3 months since I've posted anything at all, I understand. Well, Helen has had quite the schedule of heavy lifting working for <a href="http://www.mso.org/">these people</a> . That's mostly it, no other excuses. I'm enjoying my afterlife here...it's fun. I don't know why some humans call it the Rainbow Bridge....I don't see any bridges or rainbows. Just lots of nice cats, all of whom I like, and plenty of mice for if you're hungry.<br />
<br />
I thought I would post a few newsy items since well, kanzashi productivity has been down some. Helen contacted this gal Sara on the Instagrams....Sara lives in New York and likes to wear men's clothing, and she blogs about it <a href="http://www.adapperchick.com/">here</a> . Sara has a great big following, and Helen was very happy that Sara was interested in modeling a couple kanzashi lapel flowers. Here's a photo of the first one that Sara chose.....<br />

<br />
Dapper, no? Check it out on Sara's website for more pix!<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, Helen's friend <a href="http://www.thezendragonfly.com/">Angela</a> was cleaning out her sewing space, and offered fabric remnants to all interested parties on the Facebooks! Helen grabbed a small bag of African cotton prints. Here are a few of her new African cotton lapel flowers:<br />

<br />
Sadie here, blogging from the beyond. Now, about a year ago, Helen was trying to make the traditional <i>asagao, </i>or morning glory petal shapes.....there are two of them, and Helen would have loved to have figured out either one of them, but she couldn't. The only thing left to do was to to make up her own. The petal she came up with is quite unorthodox in the kanzashi world, as it requires folding a square of fabric roughly into 3, like this....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSOo7ATJyg8Q-mU5_nTKruxkl3umC5U1oR9iQ_lAc-z2LfgXmmEWv2QAo73w1jYqh75hUxduU876YF2dgAMUme-FMrYqLarpz4BV71rbHV1iWMuL_yKXYOrRKMhD3mogQDTydXt6B6V27l/s1600/bowtieblog+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSOo7ATJyg8Q-mU5_nTKruxkl3umC5U1oR9iQ_lAc-z2LfgXmmEWv2QAo73w1jYqh75hUxduU876YF2dgAMUme-FMrYqLarpz4BV71rbHV1iWMuL_yKXYOrRKMhD3mogQDTydXt6B6V27l/s1600/bowtieblog+001.JPG" height="302" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
...Be sure that the raw edge isn't too close to the folded edge. Helen used 2.5 inch squares of vintage kimono silk for these, just to give you an idea of the size. Now, fold your rectangle in half.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxRLnxiXUMoqylnZotFe2uyH2Hav0pSDvQMnuostE8-INOEuTcNBvB9e2seS4avFoC-weEcsMnlY6Wqz5jZDLOcrDPKdydiyBbZLdVwnY96Eyc-Ba-QZk5fBDr1v13iTdhBl-XivBWUAot/s1600/bowtieblog+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxRLnxiXUMoqylnZotFe2uyH2Hav0pSDvQMnuostE8-INOEuTcNBvB9e2seS4avFoC-weEcsMnlY6Wqz5jZDLOcrDPKdydiyBbZLdVwnY96Eyc-Ba-QZk5fBDr1v13iTdhBl-XivBWUAot/s1600/bowtieblog+002.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
.....and now pinch it in the middle and secure it with a hair pin, or something.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Nhn69Y294c1lv3o71AXyqIZYQsv1opphigogyZ5wqthqW-_MR3ZqbAm47RQVgcY56BGzKnBLihg8fAHhy7KEHYFPp0y8432aaTjATP6Ggy4D8eHxyINeISJ0vwvHVxm5lj5qa9SJU7wv/s1600/bowtieblog+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Nhn69Y294c1lv3o71AXyqIZYQsv1opphigogyZ5wqthqW-_MR3ZqbAm47RQVgcY56BGzKnBLihg8fAHhy7KEHYFPp0y8432aaTjATP6Ggy4D8eHxyINeISJ0vwvHVxm5lj5qa9SJU7wv/s1600/bowtieblog+003.JPG" height="254" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Make two, and get them to be about the same size and shape. So, now you can sew or glue them together, whichever works for you at the moment, and then cut off the excess fabric, of course, the way you would with any kanzashi petal. OK, now hot glue the two petals together at their skinniest point.....this is just to help make the final assembly easier....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixDgZ50QAuy5BgH2lOPFe1IVz34-1XN-jKLpGyE6DS7XkZ0sGueiVSKBSRFPGPyXfVwdSukQ8agvQqUuyIuCpLsDFu0BUs2HKKCzR8Eskvc1PMc80Tgq-nesJOedNtzi-XJbylc_7W9FRL/s1600/bowtieblog+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixDgZ50QAuy5BgH2lOPFe1IVz34-1XN-jKLpGyE6DS7XkZ0sGueiVSKBSRFPGPyXfVwdSukQ8agvQqUuyIuCpLsDFu0BUs2HKKCzR8Eskvc1PMc80Tgq-nesJOedNtzi-XJbylc_7W9FRL/s1600/bowtieblog+004.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
OK, stage 1 is done. Now, cut a little fabric for the center. You may want to cut it on the bias, but it is not always necessary. Helen used a strip of fabric about 1.5 inches wide, folded it in thirds, and secured it with hair pins....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDMGlIyTJjx91I_0n84UJKgDcDLWNGFCkXrkbD16SM7i-WBrPmHdVCnx6pW1r1HrDWUXVi_mQp2lddYDo63pL_n5i7Q2tlN0hqor_BDVNadORiza2pCW_9RFtHuUUwzENuoyzq9yWIiqrC/s1600/bowtieblog+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDMGlIyTJjx91I_0n84UJKgDcDLWNGFCkXrkbD16SM7i-WBrPmHdVCnx6pW1r1HrDWUXVi_mQp2lddYDo63pL_n5i7Q2tlN0hqor_BDVNadORiza2pCW_9RFtHuUUwzENuoyzq9yWIiqrC/s1600/bowtieblog+005.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
OK, now find a part you like for the bow tie center and drape it LOOSELY over the bow.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
OK, now is the point where I have to apologize, because I wasn't around to supervise. Helen forgot to take a picture of the next step, which is to glue down these raw edges and glue the pin end of blank tie tack to the back. You need to use a tie tack finding with a very small pin base....it should look a little like a nail. Sorry about that! All right, next, cut a small oval of fabric for the backing, probably sticking with the same fabric you have been using.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAA0XgjKSNYFjBsPlajKf35VjGmsReNmQlAqMXFjZUpdWzO0HRpA5px_atKO090IKvFLsqH9YQM1FNiNbOZJwSb_2ykv-fYSS0aZ-jOSSr63hRRw1_RdCqvajtye_fuDrjOrmbA93r_Z9R/s1600/bowtieblog+012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAA0XgjKSNYFjBsPlajKf35VjGmsReNmQlAqMXFjZUpdWzO0HRpA5px_atKO090IKvFLsqH9YQM1FNiNbOZJwSb_2ykv-fYSS0aZ-jOSSr63hRRw1_RdCqvajtye_fuDrjOrmbA93r_Z9R/s1600/bowtieblog+012.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The oval can probably be skinnier, but you can always take away! Now stick the center of the oval through the tie tack pin.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
....and glue the fabric onto the pin base and also glue the edges down, making sure your backing doesn't extend too far, because we don't want it to be visible. Now is the time to make the oval skinnier if you need to. The backing covers raw edges and also protects and reinforces the pin.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Sadie here, blogging from the Beyond. It's pretty nice here, plenty to eat, sunshine, other cats to play with, mice, toys, soft places to sleep. I said I would continue to blog even after my passing, because Helen is too busy. At least here, my kidneys are just fine, thanks. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, Helen made a lot of stuff for her pal Michael to sell at his <a href="http://www.planetalphamale.com/">Planet Alpha Male</a> booth at the 4th Annual Last Ditch Effort fair, the brainchild of Helen and Michael's friend <a href="http://www.thezendragonfly.com/">Angela</a> . The Last Ditch has all sorts of great local handmade stuff: art, accessories, jewelry, food, reiki, massage, home decor, soaps, you name it. And it is just a few days before Christmas, for all us procrastinators. So you see, this is OUR fair.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Helen only had the chance to take a few pictures of the seasonal kanzashi lapel pins that she made special for the Last Ditch Effort. Some of them are quite unique, so I thought I would show them to you. First, Helen's only kanzashi poinsettia, shantung silk with some new mineral beads whose name Helen can't remember.....</div>

Kanzashi bow tie? It's easy! First, look at one of my older blog posts from when Helen had to make up her own <i>asagao </i>or morning glory petal, because she couldn't figure out either of the traditional ones. Read it <a href="http://sadieskanzashiblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/kanzashi-morning-glory.html">here</a>. I'll post a complete tutorial with pictures and everything next time! Meanwhile, for those of you who are coming, The Last Ditch Effort is Saturday, December 20th in the Milwaukee County Housing Authority building, 650 W. Reservoir Avenue in Milwaukee! Join us 11 AM to 6 PM.</div>

<br />
Well, it's time to fess up. It is with great sadness that I must report to you that Sadie the Snowball Princess died on November 20, 2014. She had been living with kidney disease for about 2 1/4 years, and that's about as long as a cat can go with that kind of thing. I loved my little woogums very much, and I hope she is in a better place.<br />
<br />
Sadie's early life was difficult. My friend <a href="http://www.jasonseedmusic.com/">Jason</a> adopted her from the Chicago <a href="http://www.anticruelty.org/">Anti-Cruelty Society</a> shelter. At that time, Sadie had just had kittens, and she was so stressed out that half the hair on her body was missing. She was to be a companion cat for Jason's well-known rambunctious and obnoxious cat, Babu. Jason brought Sadie home, and she and Babu became friends, but not before Sadie spent three days hiding under a claw-foot bathtub.<br />
<br />
Sadie lived with Jason and Babu for 6 years, after which the two cats were guests in a number of households, venturing as far away as Jason's sister's house in Houston. In late May of 2012, Jason and his mom endured the miserable 23-hour car trip to bring the two cats from Houston to my house, south of Milwaukee.<br />
<br />
I could see that the 19 1/2 year-old Babu was the boss. He called the shots, but also did the heavy lifting. When food was requested, he made the noise, but then always let Sadie eat first. If there was a lap available to sit on, it was Babu's, and Sadie was warned to stay away. Babu soon developed kitty dementia, and he died in July 2012.<br />
<br />
After Babu's death, Sadie became the alpha cat, a role she filled admirably. In addition to blogging, she also excelled in mouse-catching, mouse-intimidation, lap-sitting, and napping. We were very close.<br />
<br />
In the latter part of Sadie's life, we treated high blood pressure and anemia, in addition to her kidney disease. She did very well with her various therapies, but in the end, kidney failure is kidney failure, and her condition worsened very quickly. I was grateful that we were able to do euthanasia at home, to ease Sadie's journey into the next kitty world smoothly.<br />
<br />
Um, I have no new kanzashi photos to share with you at this time, but Sadie has graciously agreed to blog posthumously from her afterlife, and she will be probably be getting to that in the next few weeks.Sadie the Snowball Princesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01881018950014693017noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8371762404197318961.post-55333681337426227462014-10-16T19:23:00.001-07:002014-10-16T19:23:33.446-07:00Planet Alpha Male<br />

I mentioned a few posts ago that Helen was going to partner up with a marketing professional to sell her kanzashi men's lapel flowers. Well, it has happened! The webstore is up. A few more things are going to happen to complete it, but you can now get a look at some of the flower pins Helen has made especially for the shop at <a href="http://planetalphamale.com/shop.html">Planet Alpha Male</a>. Here are a few of my favorites:<br />

<br />
Veteran's Day/Armistice Day/Remembrance Day is a little over a month away. Helen never gave it a second thought until one of her cousins, who spent some childhood years in Europe and visited there as an adult, suggested that she make a remembrance poppy lapel flower. These are a frequent accessory in the UK and a few other places, it turns out, at this time of year. A little Internet research revealed that this bright red poppy, <i>Papaver rhoeas </i>or the Flanders poppy, grows readily on disturbed earth, and the battlefields of Europe during World War I provided plenty of that.<br />
<br />
So, here is Helen's kanzashi version of the remembrance poppy....<br />

OK you guys, Helen promised a tutorial, and she is delivering! Finally. Have you ever had some small beads that matched your kanzashi flower really well, but you didn't want to use them, because they wouldn't cover up the raw edges of the center well enough? No? Well it could happen, and here's what you can do about it.<br />
<br />
This is Helen's New Technique, and it occurred to her while she was doing God-knows-what, but it's pretty easy. Here's what you do.....for a small flower, wire together 3 beads, like this....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIzeSVmFyxDQiConjlJ52NTLys_OBZ9SDR0nYvGyZ9CtJIR7TzOCRuZ4vHFtlD15Yp6W3jR8JzzUPohcDqUCJFQDBCiZ8Fln0oetKFhv6zGlXZJFeHsEbvQXfGWA3xdUTHaSzJO36h_xP3/s1600/wireblog+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIzeSVmFyxDQiConjlJ52NTLys_OBZ9SDR0nYvGyZ9CtJIR7TzOCRuZ4vHFtlD15Yp6W3jR8JzzUPohcDqUCJFQDBCiZ8Fln0oetKFhv6zGlXZJFeHsEbvQXfGWA3xdUTHaSzJO36h_xP3/s1600/wireblog+001.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If you want, you can have the wire crossing over the beads.....will show examples of this later. Anyhoo, leave a length of wire behind it, OK? Now, just insert your contraption into the small hole in the center of your flower....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheNMnd4vl07gGZdWt5y5UBMJpPqSFEhnhiV3_WCdaFVZflG1TERirUPhHNKvL7ZZKOAAymOK7xe6c0IgmzgWNpk3jq9Bx9FpT4gaCESMi_RJGjoMslZlv0HcU0SgoMUK-LopbRDRVK6BrG/s1600/wireblog+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheNMnd4vl07gGZdWt5y5UBMJpPqSFEhnhiV3_WCdaFVZflG1TERirUPhHNKvL7ZZKOAAymOK7xe6c0IgmzgWNpk3jq9Bx9FpT4gaCESMi_RJGjoMslZlv0HcU0SgoMUK-LopbRDRVK6BrG/s1600/wireblog+003.JPG" height="320" width="305" /></a></div>
<br />
Sorry about the crappy photo quality. We were using a fluorescent light, and it's hard to photograph purple properly with Helen's camera! Here's another photo to show you what we're doing....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9rQlZiD5p-S4uDL4waqdPvhujgXMKjL3LavAsy_jushy2A0abNmCb_RsDxjsQaaXfE4-kU_7ZhyphenhyphenJl79iZxDqlnBZgL9_5AVHm125NCaOYxZc-K42H3S9NJQGpCpxcVHiMySZAdAYqobSO/s1600/wireblog+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9rQlZiD5p-S4uDL4waqdPvhujgXMKjL3LavAsy_jushy2A0abNmCb_RsDxjsQaaXfE4-kU_7ZhyphenhyphenJl79iZxDqlnBZgL9_5AVHm125NCaOYxZc-K42H3S9NJQGpCpxcVHiMySZAdAYqobSO/s1600/wireblog+004.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So, insert the wire all the way into the flower, making sure the beads are as centered as possible. Cut the ends short enough to fold them onto the back of the flower, like this.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqPPWvctNocUWq7fyOUzC6mNIoKlie_hup8EdqR-43CctaSHGSlS8uHn4YRV3UL1f6eV3unX_w5OLaVtYWWwcsJYxnmdRFkCu_Eqr2TkX42-k-hQ20re1Tz9YTjQ2-UTx-S8fXMsIO4bE-/s1600/wireblog+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqPPWvctNocUWq7fyOUzC6mNIoKlie_hup8EdqR-43CctaSHGSlS8uHn4YRV3UL1f6eV3unX_w5OLaVtYWWwcsJYxnmdRFkCu_Eqr2TkX42-k-hQ20re1Tz9YTjQ2-UTx-S8fXMsIO4bE-/s1600/wireblog+006.JPG" height="299" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now, make a backing of some sort to glue over the wire ends, sealing them in place....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSPhddt0zEaRrkLOYBoefs0X2iwjgRDgynJGTDCrCKiugH01iuutxidC9KL8KaxCmmWS8X-Nn43qJwjoM1bnfLwo9z1HhZZN0IzwPDfL_EEPgvkYrgtKKK6X2WiM6b4Bd5quYoBLFykxCx/s1600/wireblog+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSPhddt0zEaRrkLOYBoefs0X2iwjgRDgynJGTDCrCKiugH01iuutxidC9KL8KaxCmmWS8X-Nn43qJwjoM1bnfLwo9z1HhZZN0IzwPDfL_EEPgvkYrgtKKK6X2WiM6b4Bd5quYoBLFykxCx/s1600/wireblog+007.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here's the flower; silk with lepidolite beads.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicnVOY377TNeNipd523MzlXIX2Qw2-QkvhIv6qwSI7a2Rd7adekGOajoiNj_fh4410IfEtnTI6nqoIF2jmlvPJ0g12XSoyU0aldpSvF234KwjP2XX87BMpmBlvZEuBFrwSvIDh4E7futFA/s1600/wireblog+012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicnVOY377TNeNipd523MzlXIX2Qw2-QkvhIv6qwSI7a2Rd7adekGOajoiNj_fh4410IfEtnTI6nqoIF2jmlvPJ0g12XSoyU0aldpSvF234KwjP2XX87BMpmBlvZEuBFrwSvIDh4E7futFA/s1600/wireblog+012.JPG" height="313" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Easy, huh? Now, here are two other examples of the same technique. The first is a batik cotton with amethyst beads.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikC36JjP0kzMoA1goxmho5MZccVJbISlGTQXsy1JHqnHuaSyo-WmTuX3p1n7irQNikPOF3mWE6Q0Ufr0niLUqfoOKqUEbO1_aJ7dhHycHPvpBoBgMYjq3EE_f3uafpj5NrrUkoyWxYD99f/s1600/wireblog+008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikC36JjP0kzMoA1goxmho5MZccVJbISlGTQXsy1JHqnHuaSyo-WmTuX3p1n7irQNikPOF3mWE6Q0Ufr0niLUqfoOKqUEbO1_aJ7dhHycHPvpBoBgMYjq3EE_f3uafpj5NrrUkoyWxYD99f/s1600/wireblog+008.JPG" height="279" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
See how the wire crosses over the beads, sort of? And here's a very similar one, another batik cotton with sodalite beads.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42pfbsLEK8nTLWWzP_rKlbjtMMPZhq4eZkMiULG0e7yZqKZcpRhrnA7uFVoWs0pnqUPrHZ-_wiIuZehSkn0mXnPjODYpOgiTXGywoS63IeTtrcQ3Mfsz956URqbLw8MfeTMrB3pssre9x/s1600/wireblog+010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42pfbsLEK8nTLWWzP_rKlbjtMMPZhq4eZkMiULG0e7yZqKZcpRhrnA7uFVoWs0pnqUPrHZ-_wiIuZehSkn0mXnPjODYpOgiTXGywoS63IeTtrcQ3Mfsz956URqbLw8MfeTMrB3pssre9x/s1600/wireblog+010.JPG" height="300" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And that's Helen's latest contribution to the art of kanzashi! You're welcome. <br />
Helen's summer was packed with new kanzashi, and she is glad to have had the opportunity to make so many new things! One thing she forgot to tell me about in time for the last post was a little collaboration she did with her friend <a href="http://www.designbylannette.etsy.com/">Lannette</a>. Lannette designs mostly bridal gowns in Southern California, and she creates flower girl dresses, too. She sent Helen some lovely plum, lavender and ivory satins, and asked for flowers for the dress's sash and a complementary hair clip. Here's what Helen came up with....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Now, Helen has two things to announce. First, she is partnering with a friend who is a marketing professional, to sell most of her new flower lapel pins on her friend's website (yay)! They have just barely started this process, so I won't send you to any links yet, because there's nothing online to see at this moment. Helen is just thrilled that she has the support of a knowledgeable (and impressive!) person to sell these things, because selling is the Supreme Challenge, and Helen is an orchestra musician, so who do you think has the better chance of marketing this stuff successfully? More when we have something to show you!<br />
<br />
The next thing is that Helen figured out a New Thing for kanzashi flower centers, and she is going to do a tutorial for me to post soon. Helen has had a flurry of creative activity this summer, because she suddenly had a flood of ideas for kanzashi flower lapel pins. All those darker and understated kimono remnants and silk tie remnants sitting around that are too somber for women's hair accessories are perfect for men's lapel flowers! Eureka. Here are a few that are in her Etsy shop:<br />
<br />
Well, this one's not dark, but it is an improvement on the <i>nanohana </i>flower that Helen made for her friend's birthday (see previous post). This <i>nanohana </i>boutonniere is vintage kimono silk with a silk crepe leaf and a freshwater pearl.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipf9zDtMUbnqx03qY6Jt697ORCmIeeL-oWAaCHTiM8nSt407KCZo1WmFDD0L1m1iWyj-02DkOIXEIjFHhcXB6d-S4BcBC7tbNvnGEr5FXwYLKys2YJnBvOxMvKhd-3IbxP4fXhBpK0AqX3/s1600/nanohana+012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipf9zDtMUbnqx03qY6Jt697ORCmIeeL-oWAaCHTiM8nSt407KCZo1WmFDD0L1m1iWyj-02DkOIXEIjFHhcXB6d-S4BcBC7tbNvnGEr5FXwYLKys2YJnBvOxMvKhd-3IbxP4fXhBpK0AqX3/s1600/nanohana+012.JPG" height="288" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Buy it <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/197322153/yellow-flower-lapel-pin-boutonniere?">here </a>....next is a slate-blue single hydrangea blossom made from silk crepe and a tiny sodalite bead that Helen managed to sew right in the center of the flower (applause)....<br />

OK, and the last one for right now is already spoken for, but don't worry, Helen will make another one! This one is from a vintage kimono silk that we just love, but just didn't ever work as a women's accessory of any sort....</div>

Much more to come! Helen has always been enamored of miniatures, and this lapel flower business is right where she likes to be. </div>

<br />
So, hope you are having an enjoyable summer. We've been busy tying up loose ends. Helen is frazzled, for some reason, feels like she can't catch up. She hauled me into the vet's office the other day. They poked me with all sorts of things. Seems like Helen is the one who could use some medical attention.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I'm going to talk about something new for kanzashi today. I mentioned in an earlier post that a guy in New York contacted Helen, asking for a teeny little flower to be used as a lapel pin. It took 2 months to come up with a prototype, and I'm still not allowed to show it to you, but it opened the door to a whole new category of kanzashi for Helen to make: <i>les boutonnieres. </i>Here are a few things that Helen has made as gifts. First, a little <i>nanohana </i>flower as a birthday present for one of her friends, made from vintage kimono silk and a coin pearl.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoaPvCBpTrhVabVoU2jeyHgzFCB6szibbSSOVCgjSBnWSMKCuGsh35RkEKYivPoKwgU2QaHfQT7zEWHnksOzfMPM_bHHquEWVEUDJAao2psTbuCAtbnD0EAb7S-OruJ5553umz203Y7140/s1600/blogetc+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoaPvCBpTrhVabVoU2jeyHgzFCB6szibbSSOVCgjSBnWSMKCuGsh35RkEKYivPoKwgU2QaHfQT7zEWHnksOzfMPM_bHHquEWVEUDJAao2psTbuCAtbnD0EAb7S-OruJ5553umz203Y7140/s1600/blogetc+001.JPG" height="291" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
.....and some dupioni silk roses....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj66ldO1SG0lOYfoWvpwiWQhO5d3lpk1F7zN-PyTabNo_VknwU2GBoCUxgy-ToZDGXJR1xcnPjQQ1vPCxGbe5tDakYaWpEd0fOAiCwnUBRkZPX-kQGldb7ZacQ6WTjJ5X-i2BethtK0pyGX/s1600/blogetc+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj66ldO1SG0lOYfoWvpwiWQhO5d3lpk1F7zN-PyTabNo_VknwU2GBoCUxgy-ToZDGXJR1xcnPjQQ1vPCxGbe5tDakYaWpEd0fOAiCwnUBRkZPX-kQGldb7ZacQ6WTjJ5X-i2BethtK0pyGX/s1600/blogetc+002.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
These flowers are each about 1.5 inches in diameter, so quite small. So, that's actually it for the lapel pins for right now. Next are some new things that Helen is giving her friend Denise to sell at her <a href="http://www.platinumsalontosa.com/">hair salon</a>. Here's a new ponytail flower made from 3 different batik cottons.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Good heavens, how could 2 months go by with no blog post? I guess we've been pretty distracted. Ten thousand apologies.<br />
<br />
Helen is finally starting to get the hang of this kanzashi cuff bracelet business. It has certainly taken long enough. As with many things in kanzashi making, it's a matter of thinking through the geometry.<br />
<br />
So, here's the latest bridal cuff bracelet. This one ties on the underside with a ribbon, so that it can fit on almost everyone. It's made from shantung silk that Helen got from her friend <a href="http://designbylannette.blogspot.com/">Lannette</a> , and it's quite an elegant leaf design...<span id="goog_732706"></span><span id="goog_732707"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGm3UqyS7rzQpbcmTEpRhUvw9WkIKhHcC6ZY9mOC5L25AAGUUHqzwnDgVZknY2kjkLVgBRfWVJQs-wGjqlhaQpM1plYXllpzzzGyDqFHfZY3MYVLBpePp-9Ft4HAr0nj9WY7lexpCPj9zL/s1600/nuplum+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGm3UqyS7rzQpbcmTEpRhUvw9WkIKhHcC6ZY9mOC5L25AAGUUHqzwnDgVZknY2kjkLVgBRfWVJQs-wGjqlhaQpM1plYXllpzzzGyDqFHfZY3MYVLBpePp-9Ft4HAr0nj9WY7lexpCPj9zL/s1600/nuplum+007.JPG" height="282" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It actually fits a little loosely on our bracelet model, but it still pretty much stays put. So, here is the whole thing spread out.....<br />

There are many more possibilities for bracelets and necklaces, we have come to realize. Stay tuned! <br />
So sorry it has been such a long time since I have posted (again!.....what's with that?)! Helen has had a lot of heavy lifting at work, and I've been sleepy, but I've also been practicing bottle cap hockey....you can see in the photo that I am absolutely dominating my game! Anyway, Helen made a couple of new chrysanthemum shaped flowers, and I thought I would write an article about it. I know, I know, it is NOT chrysanthemum season!<br />
<br />
Helen's chrysanthemums are somewhat less formal than the ones that other kanzashi artists have been <br />
making. In a way, they're really not true <em>kiku </em>chrysanthemums at all, but just large pointy flowers with something convenient in the middle. Such a sellout. Most chrysanthemum kanzashi will have several layers of these pointy petals. Here are some REAL <em>kiku.</em><br />
<em></em><br />
<br />
First, a <a href="http://www.lilyashes.etsy.com%20/">Kanzashi Temple</a> piece, large, dark, mysterious, and complex....<br />

<br />
As you can see, kanzashi chrysanthemums are as varied as real ones.....so many flower forms and colors.<br />
<br />
So, back to Helen's rather <i>casual </i>interpretations......here's a black and white little number to go with today's new fashions.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
So, in the end, Helen's chrysanthemums look pretty stylized and really don't resemble the real flowers, but you know, nobody much seems to care, and kanzashi is all about being stylized. So, enjoy.<br />

<br />
A few weeks ago, a guy contacted Helen and asked her to design a tiny little kanzashi magnolia. Helen came up with two preliminary ideas, and he chose one of them. More on this in a later post!<br />
<br />
The other design, the one that the guy didn't choose, is the one that Helen decided to blow up to a more normal kanzashi hair accessory size, and to make into a bridal head piece. Now, magnolias are kind of challenging in a kanzashi context, as their petals (or "tepals", the proper botanical term) are rounded, yet pointed, in a way that's just difficult to reproduce in the kanzashi technique. Helen managed to get the shape right (sort of) with a rounded petal into which she pressed a little crease with an iron, at an intermediate juncture of the petal's fabrication! I can't really explain it better than that, but I know you kanzashi artists will experiment with it, if you haven't already!<br />
<br />
Here's the flower.....<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are very few kanzashi magnolias to be found in the online universe, and now Helen and I know why. They are difficult to represent, even in the stylized kanzashi world. Helen will soon be making more magnolias of a different kind, perhaps a lot of them! For this reason, she has decided to give that rice glue another try, and whipped up a batch in the kitchen yesterday. Makes a big mess!</div>

<br />
When will we get a little break from this weather? You can probably tell from my expression that even an indoor cat like myself could use a little warmth. I didn't know how easy I had it when I lived with Helen's friend <a href="http://www.jasonseedmusic.com/">Jason's</a> sister in Houston.<br />
<br />
Just a new configuration of bracelet "components" makes this new bracelet post-worthy. It came out a bit larger than the others that are similar to this one; Helen's other bracelets fit Helen (big surprise). This one really <i>needs</i> a larger wrist for the design to make sense. Made mainly from dupioni silk.....<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
....and a freshwater pearl sewn into the flower's center.Our modeled photos came out kind of crappy, so we'll skip those, shall we? We have something else to discuss, anyway! Helen has been busily preparing for the bridal trunk show at <a href="http://www.thirdcoaststyle.com/">Third Coast Style</a> for like, months. She is now finished with sewing and is almost done with display preparations, which involved making tags or cards, among other things, for 118 different items. Here are some of them....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9PMpZF148FLX39EmoLLWj1GApKaJ-nZmxUFJlPGAQejeSLKx3njpdAjOW4_FdrY08FbFtSoiAxuqeuTkl6rtIkIkQKfQPdyouLNfXal9EtROomfmk8eCBaUxrAoF8zpayiZverb-jsySP/s1600/995859_10152199412432766_1976926388_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9PMpZF148FLX39EmoLLWj1GApKaJ-nZmxUFJlPGAQejeSLKx3njpdAjOW4_FdrY08FbFtSoiAxuqeuTkl6rtIkIkQKfQPdyouLNfXal9EtROomfmk8eCBaUxrAoF8zpayiZverb-jsySP/s1600/995859_10152199412432766_1976926388_n.jpg" height="320" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you can see, they are not all kanzashi.....Helen really enjoys making flowers from singed fabric. Singed fabric flowers are often faster to make, but the technique does bring a certain amount of volatility that you might expect when <i>melting</i> the edges of synthetic cloth. Plus, who knows what kind of pollutants you might be inhaling? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyhoo, I want all of you who live in or around Milwaukee to go see Helen's stuff at Third Coast Style! The bridal show will be going on for about 2 weeks, February 12-March 2. Even if you aren't a bride, there's lots that you might be interested in.....many brightly colored items, some of which are not available at Helen's <a href="http://www.empressbarrettes.etsy.com/">Etsy shop</a>, plus a whole store full of cool stuff, all of it designed in the Milwaukee area. Go check out Milwaukee's newest boutique!</div>

<br />
It's Polar Vortex II here in the upper Midwestern US! Helen cancelled everything for today to stay in and make stuff, woohoo! Predicted lows for tonight? Somewhere in the -17 to -20 degrees F. range.<br />
<br />
So, Helen has been working very hard for the last couple months on her latest project, the Bridal Trunk Show at <a href="http://thirdcoaststyle.com/">Third Coast Style</a> , Milwaukee's newest boutique. Third Coast Style is dedicated to selling the work of Milwaukee designers, and is located in our downtown's Fashion District. The trunk show goes from February 12th to March 2nd, and features the work of 14 designers.<br />
<br />
So, I just wanted to show you some of these newer bridal things that you may not have seen yet. First, here's a large cream and beige kanzashi rose that Helen made from some silk charmeuse she got from <a href="http://www.patriceprocopio.com/">Patrice</a>....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjndsJqlOoeIx4dJGG5wBEkJtlKAVn6bxLmyuJviKvw0EGpTD8NTj89sF-8CDEhbZIxY2wOCtQcwDyGN6wIAQnrP1gIKEuAozZL08jfKd6gswqW9W9rRr9dnkm1GjG-0NxZEe5PTglPiZOM/s1600/creamrosesadie+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjndsJqlOoeIx4dJGG5wBEkJtlKAVn6bxLmyuJviKvw0EGpTD8NTj89sF-8CDEhbZIxY2wOCtQcwDyGN6wIAQnrP1gIKEuAozZL08jfKd6gswqW9W9rRr9dnkm1GjG-0NxZEe5PTglPiZOM/s1600/creamrosesadie+002.JPG" height="304" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
....and here's a sort of stylized <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/169769592/ivory-flower-bridal-fascinator-kanzashi?ref=shop_home_feat_2">lotus</a> of shantung silk that <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/DesignByLannette">Lannette</a> gave to Helen a while ago.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEi0hruaooqDEtsKOT2mnP5kXZDfh7SDMZpPgauNZ4ilcs_6Wi5JMnKZ3AcREy15YozY_nkT5wA9n25RveCRSLBHjkCOiu_qyM6SdVuc4TerLGU3-Ii6jSS5RUmhH19on8kaIE_RBSbcxn/s1600/fauxlotus+010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEi0hruaooqDEtsKOT2mnP5kXZDfh7SDMZpPgauNZ4ilcs_6Wi5JMnKZ3AcREy15YozY_nkT5wA9n25RveCRSLBHjkCOiu_qyM6SdVuc4TerLGU3-Ii6jSS5RUmhH19on8kaIE_RBSbcxn/s1600/fauxlotus+010.JPG" height="178" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the bridal <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/177308574/ivory-flower-bridal-fascinator-kanzashi?ref=shop_home_active_1">peony</a> Helen just finished today, from ivory habutai and green moire....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv8YIMqyC9PXhfyr1SNRVfLPetITN-bPmEfXlw5_5_aTuxUo99OwUgTxESHcRwqZjHnxEtA9h6iaIWK2Z_sN_I-ClmBU99aZ2wamxPyTLDKkyta3vlHIi6njNtal25PUG2LKqOdnIOXHsY/s1600/bridalpeony+008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv8YIMqyC9PXhfyr1SNRVfLPetITN-bPmEfXlw5_5_aTuxUo99OwUgTxESHcRwqZjHnxEtA9h6iaIWK2Z_sN_I-ClmBU99aZ2wamxPyTLDKkyta3vlHIi6njNtal25PUG2LKqOdnIOXHsY/s1600/bridalpeony+008.JPG" height="294" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
......and reminiscent of the peony, here's the newest version of Helen's <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/155473928/ivory-flower-bridal-fascinator-yorkshire?ref=shop_home_active_3">Yorkshire Rose</a>.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOMEok9qvooAxHCnfVS5lGDYHpvkIIXF7wBiwXRW_cple9JG-gDgmvAZhYsarUjKsWVIZtnPU3dycx3Tw1m0CM45cTzlLUd1hqHDtXrz7cVD6QqpBfeBYGQyjCmaEc2iS5pkeJ3Y7o-d5G/s1600/nuyork+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOMEok9qvooAxHCnfVS5lGDYHpvkIIXF7wBiwXRW_cple9JG-gDgmvAZhYsarUjKsWVIZtnPU3dycx3Tw1m0CM45cTzlLUd1hqHDtXrz7cVD6QqpBfeBYGQyjCmaEc2iS5pkeJ3Y7o-d5G/s1600/nuyork+001.JPG" height="320" width="311" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, something <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/89553656/white-flower-bridal-fascinator-comb?ref=shop_home_active_25">older</a> that I haven't posted here before, but is something of an achievement of Kanzashi engineering, as it coaxes a teardrop shaped crystal bead to stand on its end.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIj4bd_7fqwq7IwepD1Mmy1e5AZwBlp8wKlG3JVkYXbP9fa7lSIpBTYnncXqVHEiiXAnRkHAoBj1xOvzTY9eDRXfbOqBTa_Bc782T1meHsqM1xT1fF4D5JbmuVHbsxtLCyhxTVBGng90sF/s1600/bridalnutudor+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIj4bd_7fqwq7IwepD1Mmy1e5AZwBlp8wKlG3JVkYXbP9fa7lSIpBTYnncXqVHEiiXAnRkHAoBj1xOvzTY9eDRXfbOqBTa_Bc782T1meHsqM1xT1fF4D5JbmuVHbsxtLCyhxTVBGng90sF/s1600/bridalnutudor+003.JPG" height="319" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There's plenty of other stuff, of course. Less rewarding than creating the designs is coming up with effective display, which is the next project. Let's all wish Helen some luck here, as it is not her strongest ability!<br />

<br />
It's cold. Here I am in one of my Winter Places, next to a heat duct. It's where I live. Helen lives there too, always has, I hear. She keeps the house at 64 degrees F, so who wouldn't be huddling in front of the heat?<br />
<br />
So, more bracelets. These are bridal, and more variations and colors are on the way, I understand. The idea is similar to Helen's kanzashi <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/119902084/ivory-bridal-headband-kanzashi-silk?">headbands</a>.....Greek goddess-like wreaths of laurel leaves, or something. First, the shantung silk single-leaf bracelet.....<br />

...You might notice that the flower is <i>not</i> a kanzashi flower. Helen said she couldn't make one that small. Its purpose is to cover the snap closure, and of course, it's pretty. Here's our model wearing it.....<br />

Well, it's officially winter, and the weather around here has been annoying, and about to get far worse, from what I understand. Good time to turn our attention to other things, like this new bracelet idea.<br />
<br />
Helen's friend Erin loves the color green, and each December, Helen gives herself the personal challenge of making something green for Erin's birthday. Since Helen noticed that Erin had been wearing a beautiful jade bracelet, you know in which direction the new ideas started to go! And since Helen and Erin's orchestral colleagues like to decorate themselves quite a bit for their Christmas concerts, well.....here's the fabric Helen chose, a chirimen silk sent by her Kanzashi Fairy Godmother in Japan.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_KpVMErkzNdyWQA4y75NLlqtuAifrEy2H6uM_BUrwdXqypuAxhdOrx79WGW0VCh2sIYct2mHfK81wzcErkpGyjj5aZWp-kAgy6LXlu4VffaBrVma_XxZuAjOkmrqbEoPZRTLR7i6_00RO/s1600/betterturx+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_KpVMErkzNdyWQA4y75NLlqtuAifrEy2H6uM_BUrwdXqypuAxhdOrx79WGW0VCh2sIYct2mHfK81wzcErkpGyjj5aZWp-kAgy6LXlu4VffaBrVma_XxZuAjOkmrqbEoPZRTLR7i6_00RO/s320/betterturx+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Helen used an idea similar to last year's <a href="http://sadieskanzashiblog.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2012-12-19T13:58:00-08:00&max-results=7&start=14&by-date=false">kanzashi Christmas wreath pin</a>....make a lot of skinny pointy petals, and glue them together in groups of three, then glue the groups to each other. Here's what she got:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
An abstract sort of pepperminty wreath for your wrist! How do you fasten it? With some snaps.....<br />

This design is pretty labor intensive, so Helen decided not to put it into commercial production, haha, but <i>you</i> go ahead and make it. You have time, right? <br />
Season's Greetings to all, and as usual, there's not much time to post today, but I thought I'd show you a couple new Christmas pieces that Helen has made for her Etsy shop.<br />
<br />
First, one of Helen's many cross-cultural creations! A pair of kanzashi bobby pin flowers made from a small remnant of the vintage Liberty of London cotton print, "Ianthe". Helen had no idea that Liberty of London, or Liberty Tana Lawn, was A Thing, but it is. Helen showed the fabric to J9 over her Thanksgiving visit, and J9, a fabric connoisseur, got all excited. Here's the pattern, a very art nouveau looking thing....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0LPGTJsuBLByjjmK6kM4HR57KvZ8-43y8sSH7mn4W6fTQlHtP5W5cvYNxnLgVXXgr1Qv4abi543bBiV-A5vFSNyeWFaeMNqoVOYqFS3GhvwW0bR1MZhc8Y7dIn9XvExa0-u7_p52MYtn1/s1600/il_570xN_271637687.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0LPGTJsuBLByjjmK6kM4HR57KvZ8-43y8sSH7mn4W6fTQlHtP5W5cvYNxnLgVXXgr1Qv4abi543bBiV-A5vFSNyeWFaeMNqoVOYqFS3GhvwW0bR1MZhc8Y7dIn9XvExa0-u7_p52MYtn1/s320/il_570xN_271637687.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
.....and here are Helen's more abstract looking bobby pins, complete with vintage faux pearls....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPU0N253W45ezlSlb6EPRqbP_YrO47pAeBta-bfdvpT4U4SjNlcJuiqYg8BmY509yDz8R_0iL-uAY6FNpq4cXbkoKsI6TVZSMOUKUXgyI5aks7iSyij_VOMaHBt9veZOVjL88P0udp_M5V/s1600/nuxmas+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPU0N253W45ezlSlb6EPRqbP_YrO47pAeBta-bfdvpT4U4SjNlcJuiqYg8BmY509yDz8R_0iL-uAY6FNpq4cXbkoKsI6TVZSMOUKUXgyI5aks7iSyij_VOMaHBt9veZOVjL88P0udp_M5V/s320/nuxmas+004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Buy 'em <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/171516972/christmas-kanzashi-flower-bobby-pins?ref=shop_home_active">here</a> . Next, here are some snap clip flowers that Helen made from a small piece of Japanese linen that Suzanne C. gave to Helen. Very Christmassy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVwfOBvvOAmRaWyc4GuJ0m8L-CVovyeA6fKkcNbILvPAvCDfwKmhOeg0t5qwnusxIc-3lv6cKOC8EiOwnnjgvzxEJ8UF9LvDYZ1tyMw3sSgdHqSCyfLEc0XObtMTlzIFjl_CKZdQrX0Lmp/s1600/nuxmas+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="209" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVwfOBvvOAmRaWyc4GuJ0m8L-CVovyeA6fKkcNbILvPAvCDfwKmhOeg0t5qwnusxIc-3lv6cKOC8EiOwnnjgvzxEJ8UF9LvDYZ1tyMw3sSgdHqSCyfLEc0XObtMTlzIFjl_CKZdQrX0Lmp/s320/nuxmas+007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Bigger pictures are <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/171670446/red-flower-hair-clips-christmas-kanzashi?">here</a> , where you can also buy them. There's another Christmassy sort of thing coming down the pike, but we need to reserve that one for another post!<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, J9 convinced Helen to try a rotary cutter, which is fairly standard for kanzashi makers, but which Helen had resisted for years. The good things are that it can be a more accurate than shears and that it allows you to skip the step of marking your fabric. The down side is that Helen is having a little trouble getting the hang of it. We think that she has already managed to dull part of her blade, because of rubbing against her rulers, or something. The wheel seems to skip, and some fabric shredding is going on. Any tips from you more experienced rotary cutter users are much appreciated!Sadie the Snowball Princesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01881018950014693017noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8371762404197318961.post-2244045664315986752013-10-30T16:04:00.000-07:002013-10-30T16:04:47.961-07:00New Bobby Pin Design<br />

<br />
So, Helen has been serving an awful lot of masters, lately, and is very distracted. On the one hand, it's great to be needed and active! On the other hand, it can be pretty stressful, what with the Problems Helen and her colleagues are dealing with. <br />
<br />
Anyhoo, I wanted to show you Helen's fun new bobby pin design. Take a look!<br />

<br />
Aren't they cute? We are unsure of the fiber content, as Helen got this bright pink chiffon remnant from longtime dressmaker Susie F, but it might be silk. It sure works well with this petal shape. Helen used vintage faux pearls for the centers. Buy 'em <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/166663737/pink-flower-bobby-pins-hair-pins?">here</a> . We're thinking about what other fabrics and colors Helen can use for this design.....maybe they would be good bridal hair accessories.<br />
<br />
In other news, our friend Joana now has a fabulous licensing agreement for some of her work! Some of her whimsical fashion illustrations now adorn phone and iPad cases. Check 'em out <a href="http://www.kekacase.com/designer-cases/joana-miranda.html">here</a> .<br />
<br />
Lastly, Helen now has a new place to sell some of her wares. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ThirdCoastStyle">Third Coast Style</a> is a beautiful new store in Milwaukee's fashion district. Here are some of Helen's new Christmas-y silk pendants, which will be in the store starting mid-November....<br />

Note the blood trillium in the upper right corner. OK, so gotta go. Helen has a lot of work to do, and I'm working on staying warm.<br />

<br />
Helen and I love kanzashi morning glories! We've been admiring them for years, and Helen has tried to figure out how to make one the traditional way, with absolutely no success. We have observed two distinct petal shapes that other artists use for <i>asagao</i>, or morning glories. Here's an example of one....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZeYvVImKy_LFirXjQTOIhMIK1Fb1pQmYGTJD_e8mKrGd2KlzqfFqMezq2WakTgxrsdCtXj405KQyMuI3pTz9iO4B_tAv7U0AN4796hmLe_scSq9FbKrV3bIRFxykAauul6JtJJrJkgO_w/s1600/il_570xN_498159674_kr4n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZeYvVImKy_LFirXjQTOIhMIK1Fb1pQmYGTJD_e8mKrGd2KlzqfFqMezq2WakTgxrsdCtXj405KQyMuI3pTz9iO4B_tAv7U0AN4796hmLe_scSq9FbKrV3bIRFxykAauul6JtJJrJkgO_w/s320/il_570xN_498159674_kr4n.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
....it might be hard to see, but it's a rounded petal that creates a trumpet-shaped flower. We think it's just so beautiful. You can buy this one on Etsy from JagataraArt <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/161748058/morning-glory-comb-in-navy-blue-hair?ref=sr_gallery_6&ga_search_query=kanzashi+morning+glory&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all&ga_facet=kanzashi+morning+glory">here</a> . Now, here's an example of the other petal shape, equally as beautiful....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPvmZVRDGe9rzdqm6w-GeMwskk5PrGjSKUQWAm3uyZHZOB0e8QAYFKAOv1_3j97Jc-GSiUQZpjOFuDyJh6scZbiyD4QKebGx01PdCDa8jNMOqkmBz60vu9F7z07OJxaGJQMYrvtGMt9xy7/s1600/il_570xN_496614042_c5yg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPvmZVRDGe9rzdqm6w-GeMwskk5PrGjSKUQWAm3uyZHZOB0e8QAYFKAOv1_3j97Jc-GSiUQZpjOFuDyJh6scZbiyD4QKebGx01PdCDa8jNMOqkmBz60vu9F7z07OJxaGJQMYrvtGMt9xy7/s320/il_570xN_496614042_c5yg.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is also available on Etsy from GirLinKimono ; buy it <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/161336103/purple-late-summer-asagao-morning-glory?ref=sr_gallery_9&ga_search_query=kanzashi+morning+glory&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all&ga_facet=kanzashi+morning+glory">here</a> . Well, Helen even found an online tutorial for one of these, and couldn't make head or tail out of it. Not wanting to just give up, Helen made up her <i>own </i>morning glory petal. The goal was to look something like these...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjeindCAQz6XVhvdFs1yGQQ39tv9jXaasIj106Otk5dVXeWNcUdXcV9jxQ3dwY-RYKvjC40s3QyAHLT91j4Sa_A1qUDXfrQ6PxhQ3uyZHjFal3xqOD7Ters1eRfR8j0PmF0K3N4wygWE7S/s1600/Morning_glory.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjeindCAQz6XVhvdFs1yGQQ39tv9jXaasIj106Otk5dVXeWNcUdXcV9jxQ3dwY-RYKvjC40s3QyAHLT91j4Sa_A1qUDXfrQ6PxhQ3uyZHjFal3xqOD7Ters1eRfR8j0PmF0K3N4wygWE7S/s320/Morning_glory.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
....and here's what Helen made.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE-cPYxPVJz6TqI7xQaQBNgTt6c8TcoPIr5Y__N7u7sGBk6VHG5YNP6IIgVh2l2fJoRmtyB058PfTf328fSoU1hl_9z05MY1XDpCtGAIwu2tLWkkDgLauqd84x72bUi7DNQKLgI5JawXx-/s1600/mornglo1+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE-cPYxPVJz6TqI7xQaQBNgTt6c8TcoPIr5Y__N7u7sGBk6VHG5YNP6IIgVh2l2fJoRmtyB058PfTf328fSoU1hl_9z05MY1XDpCtGAIwu2tLWkkDgLauqd84x72bUi7DNQKLgI5JawXx-/s320/mornglo1+001.JPG" height="298" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And guess what? Helen's new petal, while unorthodox for kanzashi, is pretty easy, so here's your tutorial! First, cut a 3-inch square of fabric and fold it roughly in thirds, like this...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIJ7B80vOr79_ZmS-MnfBNTcnzFPAHqeN4aDFRcMCMqskPg7ALFtowPgzmFyXbJ41kU-BT3VLQbDXE2mWG9PcPFHiE0ghHB04IGfX3690Px5knxb7EywlSUtnTeiwwRd0hP9ac2Hj4Pmst/s1600/mornglortute+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIJ7B80vOr79_ZmS-MnfBNTcnzFPAHqeN4aDFRcMCMqskPg7ALFtowPgzmFyXbJ41kU-BT3VLQbDXE2mWG9PcPFHiE0ghHB04IGfX3690Px5knxb7EywlSUtnTeiwwRd0hP9ac2Hj4Pmst/s320/mornglortute+001.JPG" height="313" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
....now, fold that in half...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRWT8_uliGFdfksudUZ0WV2920IQXA6qBW2o4Onzu1sC_rJEYZaySYwlMAsR0q9bMGdyFpvfwL2gKt_iX4jbIfepGJ308FpbF5j91LNra789qhr93l5A_tLcRe3gW0hF8jKG0nlffuji6z/s1600/mornglortute+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRWT8_uliGFdfksudUZ0WV2920IQXA6qBW2o4Onzu1sC_rJEYZaySYwlMAsR0q9bMGdyFpvfwL2gKt_iX4jbIfepGJ308FpbF5j91LNra789qhr93l5A_tLcRe3gW0hF8jKG0nlffuji6z/s320/mornglortute+002.JPG" height="320" width="314" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
.....now, pinch in the center, like this......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNx2s1M96G_0tfW3fcgpWp7_s2S0fmuE-DUxDOA46fzu8yTlvmaWBV1f_fC37WsEOawhSQblWdAlSRbcAt5lMoUH_s_dDCibUwq40P0AxzSSm9wFtpKPUXLbKmV2PGofu6XA6ZRKYVXWqE/s1600/mornglortute+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNx2s1M96G_0tfW3fcgpWp7_s2S0fmuE-DUxDOA46fzu8yTlvmaWBV1f_fC37WsEOawhSQblWdAlSRbcAt5lMoUH_s_dDCibUwq40P0AxzSSm9wFtpKPUXLbKmV2PGofu6XA6ZRKYVXWqE/s320/mornglortute+003.JPG" height="316" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
.....and fasten it with a bobby pin, or something.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZbVFUrRmP1N4e97M4Zdw1SGTMwxeuVD9W4A2FUa-xwFYHPt7lBha80PK8qXN3EgA3950oXX-MTWOdU-3K0KIXpcI5enK8vz3clcFxp0lTsLYSQt7OD0DpUEHN2xmoE0Qk_bNqvtMBz668/s1600/mornglortute+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZbVFUrRmP1N4e97M4Zdw1SGTMwxeuVD9W4A2FUa-xwFYHPt7lBha80PK8qXN3EgA3950oXX-MTWOdU-3K0KIXpcI5enK8vz3clcFxp0lTsLYSQt7OD0DpUEHN2xmoE0Qk_bNqvtMBz668/s320/mornglortute+004.JPG" height="319" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
......and now stitch it, or glue it....whatever you usually do to make your kanzashi petals. Helen's sewn version looks like this on the back....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxmy7UQg_jU7muled8RqX9vCBJOvw5cIMhppWh3IeRl-zPdwIqpCOTOZ_iqjT7MG1nFKQTDibt9xAto1MRKXXzObOfJC5YgepXdVWOmArDZBKJsF1Dcx46RHRIHDc-8LVdBktRL2ho9ZL7/s1600/mornglortute+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxmy7UQg_jU7muled8RqX9vCBJOvw5cIMhppWh3IeRl-zPdwIqpCOTOZ_iqjT7MG1nFKQTDibt9xAto1MRKXXzObOfJC5YgepXdVWOmArDZBKJsF1Dcx46RHRIHDc-8LVdBktRL2ho9ZL7/s320/mornglortute+005.JPG" height="320" width="319" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
OK, now glue 5 of these together, leaving no space at the top. A variation you might want to try, is to sew or glue the petals in reverse, so that the smooth side is the front of the flower. We haven't tried that out yet, but we're thinking about it. Let us know what happens if you do it, OK? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Nerdy botanical note: the above photo of flowers is a Google image generated from the keywords <em>morning glories. </em>If you search for <em>asagao</em>, you find photos of similar flowers, but the leaves are quite different; they have 3 lobes, not something you find in the Americas at all. So, we're assuming the Japanese <em>asagao</em> is a different species from what we look at in our neighborhood.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, Helen made the above comb for herself. She's got some plans to make something similar to sell, from a rich, royal blue vintage kimono silk, and I don't know, something green for the leaves. We'll keep you posted!</div>

<br />
Just a quickie, tonight, I guess. Christine posted her very lovely review of some of Helen's work a few days ago. Read it <a href="http://www.seoulstine.blogspot.com/">here</a> . Also, Christine sent Helen some of her beautiful photos, such as this one...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

(Logo by Christine). A new version of these clips is posted on Etsy <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/100582370/coral-flower-hair-clip-fascinators-silk?">here</a> . And this one. These little <i>ume, </i>or plum flowers, are listed on Etsy as a snap clip pair. Christine requested these on ponytail elastics, as she wanted to wear them with her braids. Helen thought it was a cute idea.....<br />
<br />

This is a made-to-order item, which you can find <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/103780193/flower-hair-clips-kanzashi-pastel?">here</a> .<br />
<br />
Anyhoo, at this moment, Helen is laboriously and slowly experimenting with something. Necessity is the mother of invention, as is making up something of your own if you can't figure out how to do it the way everyone else does it. All shall be revealed when Helen finally finishes her project. For now, we have high hopes.<br />

<br />
Helen started working again with <a href="http://www.mso.org/">these people</a> , so her time has gotten a little more limited for creative work. Luckily, she gets to bask in a little recognition that's been happening recently! <br />
<br />
Helen's friend <a href="http://atalentfordesign.com/">Joana</a> featured some of Helen's hair accessory designs in this whimsical little <a href="http://atalentfordesign.com/2013/10/01/jos-journey-a-somewhat-irreverent-guide-to-doing-anything-better-accessorizing-a-pixie-do/">blog post</a> . Joana knows Helen from the musical world. A few years back, Joana became a goldsmith, and began producing award-winning designs. While she currently has left jewelry design behind (we hope temporarily!) she has become quite a sophisticated fashion illustrator, and she sells her fun drawings as prints and cards <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/joanamirandastudio">here</a> .<br />
<br />
What else? During the summer, a young woman blogger in LA emailed Helen, asking to review some of her work. Helen sent Christine a few things, and Christine took some wonderful photos. The full review isn't up yet, but the sneak peak is <a href="http://seoulstine.blogspot.com/2013/09/japanese-hair-accessories.html">here</a> . <br />
<br />
I can't leave you without posting some kanzashi pictures, however. Helen is selling her kanzashi necklaces at her neighbor Terry's <a href="http://www.magpiejewelry.com/">store</a> (one of them already sold!!!) and Helen took a few photos, luckily. What have we got?<br />
<br />
Here's a little number in dupioni silk with a pink jade bead...<br />

<br />
Next: Helen made a kanzashi bobby pin in chiffon that she would love to show you. She's going to make another one in the same design, only a little smaller. Sorry, you're going to have to wait.Sadie the Snowball Princesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01881018950014693017noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8371762404197318961.post-85782413440016048802013-09-13T14:25:00.000-07:002013-09-13T14:25:29.713-07:00New Necklaces<br />

<br />
Sorry for such a hasty post! We've been pretty busy, but I wanted to just check in. Helen's experience at the dog walk last month was just terrible. She and Kas sold exactly 2 items each, including the things they sold to each other! Most sellers were disappointed, but anyway, life goes on. There will be more shows, in fact, there's one tomorrow!<br />
<br />
Helen's friend Angela invited her to share a tent at a block party on Milwaukee's East Side. This fair goes into the night-time hours, so Helen has been busily getting her lighting options together. And I thought I would just quickly show you a few of her new kanzashi necklaces that she'll be showing tomorrow.<br />
<br />
First, there's a one-of-a-kind fall colors one, made from vintage kimono silk and carnelian...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtxyPR47BZfgOLPgmOl1fDvExYuXmZVM2ErvDelErQkkXrJ46U3s4-nN07hUVVPm5gxtCEadJRhzo8l-5XvlPqjRolnnoylFr71xAyXY9bI7Ee5w1iHwnDeEGnzYSbLMJTh3y_gK-iV89o/s1600/newnecklaces+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtxyPR47BZfgOLPgmOl1fDvExYuXmZVM2ErvDelErQkkXrJ46U3s4-nN07hUVVPm5gxtCEadJRhzo8l-5XvlPqjRolnnoylFr71xAyXY9bI7Ee5w1iHwnDeEGnzYSbLMJTh3y_gK-iV89o/s320/newnecklaces+004.JPG" width="317" /></a></div>
<br />
...next is a pink dupioni silk flower with a glass bead. The petal shape here is Helen's invention...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUjOkNNXqPpiWdaxkWRlAhyphenhyphen0iirvAnKMvqLfXO1M224hrz3JuXkUgDQ-_NkAvoOjzMkdlQaqZCb5sLUyv4dfO_O1XSXden3mlr_zo826f033s7CkdLd3IarHvFuVu4yvHi5jjaSul2ESEE/s1600/newnecklaces+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUjOkNNXqPpiWdaxkWRlAhyphenhyphen0iirvAnKMvqLfXO1M224hrz3JuXkUgDQ-_NkAvoOjzMkdlQaqZCb5sLUyv4dfO_O1XSXden3mlr_zo826f033s7CkdLd3IarHvFuVu4yvHi5jjaSul2ESEE/s320/newnecklaces+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next is another one-of-a-kind item. Well, not completely, because Rebecca bought one just like it, but there's really no more fabric left, so it's sort of an exclusive. This one is vintage kimono silk with an onyx bead...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmXJWkjzv_vAWqFO0DZwVUMYraZnX4kmoPg2ZAsA3RvI4SHga_YxRFMPvANo8McCbp7kCyoA1gT1uHVCDsLw3HevDEZhjvqm6f74xnbUA4gqdE3R7HPyLpUt9YLGePWi9BQo_xMUIAMYh0/s1600/nureplace+018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmXJWkjzv_vAWqFO0DZwVUMYraZnX4kmoPg2ZAsA3RvI4SHga_YxRFMPvANo8McCbp7kCyoA1gT1uHVCDsLw3HevDEZhjvqm6f74xnbUA4gqdE3R7HPyLpUt9YLGePWi9BQo_xMUIAMYh0/s320/nureplace+018.JPG" width="313" /></a></div>
<br />
Also! Helen's neighbor Terry is a co-owner of <a href="http://www.magpiejewelry.com/">Magpie Jewelry</a> in Wauwatosa, WI. Terry loves Helen's kanzashi necklaces, and she is going to sell them at the store! Terry is very optimistic about them, which makes us happy. Helen is hoping to make a lot more of these.<br />
<br />
OK, I gotta go. Helen is going to a party tonight, and has a special order to start from an Etsy customer. Later!<br />
